Ketamine, a derivative of phencyclidine, is an anesthetic drug that was developed in 1962 and has been widely used in a variety of settings. Ketamine acts as an antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor and targets glutamate, which is an excitatory amino acid neurotransmitter.
Ketamine has been used to induce and maintain general anesthesia for more than 30 years and is on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines. Ketamine is an anesthetic that has a remarkably safe track record in clinical settings. Ketamine is commonly used to treat Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), sometimes referred to as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD).
Over the past two decades, researchers have consistently found that low doses of ketamine, administered intravenously (ketamine infusions), produce a rapid anti-depressant effect.
Ketamine Infusions work by directly impacting the brain chemicals involved in stress. When receiving a ketamine infusion, the medication temporarily blocks the glutamate receptors in the brain thereby increasing the production of glutamate. Glutamate is the most abundant amino acid in the brain and is responsible for the optimization of chemicals that enable clear thinking and stable emotions. Ketamine triggers neurogenesis, a process where new neurons are created and existing neural pathways are re-activated in healthy ways that can reduce anxiety and reinvigorate your mind. Neurogenesis is most prevalent in a growing child’s brain but continues at a diminished rate throughout your life. Age, stress, poor habits, and other factors contribute to an actual physical reduction of your brain to experience these effects and therefore influence how you act, feel and move about with your life. Ketamine can help re-invigorate your mind to get you to a better place to accept, handle, and succeed at dealing with the stressors that impact you. Ketamine has an almost immediate relaxing effect and when used for mental health disorders, some ketamine infusion patients experience immense relief within hours of their treatment. With continued treatment for severe mental health disorders, others see improvement within weeks following their second or third infusion. Mismanaged daily stress can result in much more debilitating mental and physical conditions and it is our mission to provide relief to our patients so they can experience a reprieve from stress in one of the quickest and effective ways possible, while also giving them the tools and perspective to handle whatever comes at them in the most comprehensive ways possible. A single ketamine infusion can be one of the best forms of self-care you ever find for yourself.
We aren’t all conditioned, trained, or taught how to manage this stress, it is typically something we just have to “figure out”. The space that ketamine can bring you to is much like the space that practiced meditators, yogis, athletes, and religious practices can provide. Not everyone is able to invest their time or energy into those valuable parts of life and may find other resources such as massage, acupuncture, or a spa day to help relieve their stress. While these methods are all valuable, they work primarily on a physical level and as a temporary mental break from life’s stressors. When receiving a ketamine infusion, the medicine goes to work almost instantly and relaxes your body far beyond what those other methods can do. You may know ketamine as an anesthetic used before surgery or given to children in an ambulance with a broken bone. This is the same medicine, just administered at a significantly smaller does. Patients dealing with chronic pain have reported they receive almost instant relieve from many of their symptoms. When an “average” stressed out person comes to our clinic they are instantly brought into to our relaxing, spa-like environment where they can start forgetting their worries. Once in our incredibly comfortable treatment rooms, the medicine is administered and your body will feel relaxed, many report feeling like they are floating on a cloud!
When ketamine is administered in a controlled medical setting by a properly trained and licensed clinician using established methods, it is very safe. Ketamine is the only anesthetic that does not suppress the body’s cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
When used recreationally, or outside of a controlled medical setting, ketamine use can have very serious adverse effects.
“It feels like floating”, “I felt like I was in the ocean”, “It felt warm and cozy”, “It was absolutely beautiful”, “It felt like there were infinite possibilities”, “I was in space with doors that led to whatever I could imagine”. The list goes on. Almost unanimously our clients at NeuConnections describe a level of peace they have seldom felt before and that cannot be easily achieved outside the deepest states of meditation. When compared to traditional psychedelics (psilocybin, LSD, MDMA), ketamine offers a supremely controllable and clear space to navigate your mind. Seldom disorienting or scary, the calming, dissociative space ketamine provides is the ultimate journey to clear your mind.
Dissociation is what we call “the space” when a the dosage of the medication has been dialed in allowing complete relaxation and the person feels most comfortable letting go of the stresses of the world around them. This is where most healing takes place and we take the upmost care in facilitating this experience for each and every one of our clients sessions.
When a person is “dissociated” imagine that a separation of the emotional mind and the analytical mind is occurring. Medical use of ketamine happens around the world daily. A child with a broken arm or an injured soldier who has now been sedated and put at ease by a large dose of ketamine, they are conscious, free of pain, and comforted knowing that they are being cared for despite their injuries. This is what so many people find therapeutic when experiencing ketamine. It allows them to view their trauma and what is holding them back objectively without reliving the emotions surrounding that trauma. When “dissociated” from the raw subjective emotion of the trauma, it allows them to reframe their thoughts around it and move forward without those heavy emotions following them.
The dissociative state can be overwhelming if someone is not properly prepared, but we are available every step of the way to ensure your comfort as we ease you into a space of supreme relaxation where you can be let go of the burdens of the world around you to find peace within. We will never “throw someone in” without proper preparation. Most people find they could exist in “the space” longer to continue to explore their mind and work towards their future but also that there is a world waiting for them to take action in that they are excited to engage with.
Scientists are still exploring the exact mechanism by which depression is relieved, but research suggests that by blocking the NMDA receptors, ketamine prompts the brain to increase the production of synaptic signaling proteins in the prefrontal cortex.
The prefrontal cortex is the region of the brain thought to play a critical role in a person’s ability to regulate his/her mood.
Ketamine appears to promote the growth of new synapses in the prefrontal cortex, resulting in greater connectivity in the brain, while also switching certain connections on and off. This cascade of events is thought to be the reason for the rapid anti-depressant effect.
Yes, ketamine therapy has been shown to be very effective when treating anxiety disorder, particularly when combined with conventional therapy (psychotherapy, for instance). If you have tried conventional therapy with mixed or no results, ketamine may be able to help.
The duration of symptomatic relief patients experience following ketamine infusion therapy varies.
Clients who have received ketamine infusion therapy for depression have reported significant improvements in their mood and abilities to function anywhere from weeks to months to indefinitely. At NeuConnections, we specialize in a process designed for long term results. For some clients, a single quarterly session or “booster” is what they need to get back on track or help them navigate their current situation.
Some of our clients come back once a month, most average every three months, and most never need to come back. We encourage quarterly or “Seasonal Visits” to emphasize the growth and transformation that occurs during the Induction Series. You’ve already invested so much into your healing, seasonal boosters are a more affordable way to capitalize on your initial investment. Most of our clients that come back look forward to working with us, often to check into new perspectives, manage some of the stressors showing up, relax their body, or see what new insights can be gleaned from the experience.
To achieve lasting results you will need to implement everything you have learned leading to this point. Ketamine infusions may be the “booster fuel” to get you out of a rut, but you need to “do the work” and address the root causes that will ensure lasting results. The Journey continues, but now you can be excited to take all of your new knowledge and tools with you!
It varies from patient to patient. We generally see results within a few hours after treatment with lasting results needing 6-10 infusions. Please schedule a consultation with our office so we can discuss your specific needs.
